Low Carb Breakfast Ideas
They say it’s the most important meal of the day, and it seems to be
true. If you are an experienced low carb dieter then you are familiar
with Dr. Atkins. In his famous book about the low carbohydrate diet, he
says you should ALWAYS eat breakfast, and it makes sense. It stabilizes
your blood sugar and sets the pace for the rest of the day. Plus,
starting the day with a full tummy tends to make you eat less the rest
of the day (though how much you eat is not usually an issue on a low
carb diet).
But if you’re like me, breakfast is the hardest meal of the day for a
couple reasons: I’m not ready to eat yet and I’m too lazy to cook it.
But, here are some good ideas for you to help you start your day off
right with a good low carb breakfast.

Easy Low Carb Breakfast
There are a couple things you can do (or not have to do) to make low
carb breakfast easy. Some require cooking, some don’t. If you have time
through the week, you might enjoy some light cooking. Or, maybe on the
weekend when you have more time you might like a good old country
breakfast.
It’s easy enough to make the staple breakfast of the low carb diet –
bacon and eggs. It’s just a matter of throwing a few strips of bacon in
a pan and cooking it slowly, and you can even fry the eggs in the grease
when you take the bacon out. You can also get some good low carb sausage
and have country sausage and eggs for breakfast.
If you feel a bit more creative, there’s no end to what you can do with
eggs. Fried, scramble, boiled, poached, omelets or quiches, they are
going to be your friend on this diet. You can add all kinds of
ingredients to spice them up from day to day. Try a variety of cheeses,
different kinds of smoke meats and fish, and all sorts of vegetables
including mushrooms, onion, green peppers, asparagus, green chilies, and
more. Make a nice egg scramble or an omelet with this ingredients.
Easier Low Carb Breakfast
On lazy or busy days, I have a low carb protein shake for breakfast.
Look for unsweetened or artificially sweetened whey protein – it has
less carbs than others. I put one scoop or so in a shaker with about
220-300ml of cold water and 2 or 3 heaping tablespoons of natural,
unsweetened plain yogurt and shake it by hand so I don’t have to clean a
blender.
TIP: The yogurt must be pure: only milk and live yogurt enzymes.
Otherwise, it will have too much carb. The enzymes eat the lactose and
sugars in the milk so you don’t get them.
Easiest Low Carb Breakfast
If the thought of cooking breakfast and having to clean up the mess
appalls you in the morning, you can make it easier. Some supermarkets
carry pre-scramble egg patties or even omelets that you can microwave.
Try these with some precooked microwaveable sausage and you’ll be eating
like royalty with very little fuss.
Another idea is to eat things that many people don’t consider for
breakfast, but make good ‘protein starters’ for the day. Examples would
be Vienna sausages, lunch meats and cheese, nuts and seeds, leftovers
from the night before (chicken wing, etc), or some eggs you boiled in
advance.
Get creative and ideas will come to you. I like to mix it up and do
all the things so I get some variety every day. I still have days when I
fight the breakfast battle, and even lose it (but it’s a war, not a
battle), but on my laziest days, the protein shake will do the trick
until I’m ready for something heavier – like a side of beef. |
