Low Carb Snacks

Whether you are on a low carb diet or not, we all like to have a snack sometimes; whether it’s in-between meals or while watching TV. The problem is, if you don’t know what low carb snacks are available to you, the possibility exists that you will bust out of your diet just to satisfy your cravings. After reading this, you will have a few good ideas on how to snack on your low carbohydrate diet and still be following the diet.

Beef Jerky

This is a great TV time snack. Jerky satisfies the urge to chew and is a good protein snack. Warning: most commercial jerky has ingredients in it you don’t need, like sugar and preservatives. Get a jerky maker of learn how to make your own in your oven.

Low Carb Snacks

Nuts and Seeds

Nuts and seeds make good low carb snacks, you just have to be careful that you don’t eat too many of them. There are not without carbs, just low in them. So only eat a handful or two at a time. Peanuts, almonds, cashews and sunflowers seed are good, as well as macadamia nuts.

Chicken Wings/Hot Wings

Chick winks and even drumsticks make good snacks. You can cook them in a good low carb hot sauce, like Tabasco, or if you don’t like them hot, try them in a low carb teriyaki sauce. Even just fried without flour, or back or broiled they are good. Make a bunch at a time because they are low carb and you can eat a lot of them great for when you have friends over for the ball game.

String Cheese and Lunch Meat

These are another great and quick idea for a quick snack. You best bet on lunch meat is to buy brands that have not sugars and additives, like Boar’s Head brand. Vienna sausage goes well with string cheese, too, but read the label because many have sugar or corn syrup in them. Never eat anything that has corn syrup in it. It’s one of the things that make you fat and it should never have been put in foods. Do you really want corn syrup in your meat?

Pork Rinds

Oh, yeah. This is the snackage main stay of low carb dieters. Many unknowing folks think that pork rinds are very high in fat, but they’re not. The fat has mostly been rendered out of them and they are delicious. Use them plain, as dips for cottage cheese, sour cream or salsa, or melt cheese on them like nachos with a little jalapeno (that’s best done in the oven rather than the microwave. Crushed pork rinds also make a great coating for fried chicken and meats.

Cauliflower

Believe it or not, cauliflower can be a good snack and a replacement for popcorn. Cut it up into popcorn size bits (removing the stems) and sprinkle some Crazy Mixed Up Salt on it. I will help you when you get those popcorn cravings while watching a movie on TV. Also, you can get more sophisticated and sprinkle a few tablespoons of olive oil on it along with a couple tablespoons of Mrs. Dash or Crazy Mixed Up Salt. Toss it together and bake it at 230degC on a cookie sheet turning it several times. It will turn brown, but that doesn’t mean it’s burnt – it’s just the carmelization from the sugars. Once you get use to eating it, it becomes a bit addictive.

Cabbage

Another good snack if you’re craving chips is to break off some bite-sized cabbage leaves and spread them on a microwave safe dish. Heat them on high until warm but not limp. Add salt to them. You’ll be surprised. They taste better than the sound and you’ll be happy the next day when you know you didn’t blow it because you ate low carb diet snacks.
